The Ultimate Guide To Metal Grinding: What You Need To Know

What is Metal Grinding

Metal grinding is the process of removing material from a metallic workpiece by the use of an abrasive wheel.

Grinding wheels are composed of an abrasive material, such as silicon carbide, and are mounted on a spinning wheel head. When the wheel comes into contact with the workpiece, the abrasive material grinds away the metal, shaping it into the desired form.

Metal grinding is used in a variety of industries for a variety of purposes. In most cases, it is used to produce finished parts.

Metal grinding is a manufacturing process that involves removing material from a metal workpiece through the use of an abrasive wheel

This process can be used to produce precision parts with tight tolerances or to generate a desired surface finish. Grinding wheels are typically composed of a variety of materials, including alumina oxide, silicon carbide, and diamond, which allow for the grinding of a wide range of metals and alloys.

Metal Grinding in Fabrication

The grinding process is often one of the most overlooked and important aspects of metal fabrication. In order to produce a high-quality finished product, it’s imperative that the grinding process be executed properly.

Consistently maintaining the correct angles and speeds is essential to achieve a superior surface finish with reduced marking and less distortion. In addition, proper grinding also helps to extend tool life, ensuring that your machines are running at peak performance.

Definition of Superabrasives

Industrial Superabrasives

Superabrasives are bonded abrasives developed for grinding hardest and challenging material in industries.

Generally, superabrasives are manufactured using hardest materials available on earth- Cubic Boron Nitride ( aka CBN) and Diamond.

Cutting process in industries is okay to do with normal abrasive products manufactured by high speed steels, PCD, PCBN, ceramics and carbide materials but when it comes to sharpening a surface, these materials are not able to perform task perfectly. That is why super-abrasives needed to perform this hard task in Industries.

Common Uses of Superabrasive Products.

  1. Shaping hard material and fragile materials such as glass bevellings ( automobile industry and construction industry)
  2. High precision grinding work for crystals and ceramic components.
  3. Cutting of silicon wafers
  4. Shaping saws ( circular shape)
  5. Shaping Wood work tools

Difference between abrasives and super abrasives

  1. Superabrasives are more expensive than normal abrasives ( silicon carbide and aluminum oxide)
  2. Superabrasives grinding wheels are have different constructions than normal abrasives grinding wheels
  3. Superabrasive wheels are sold in standard grit range as conventional abrasive wheels which is typically 46 through 2000 grit

Bonds used in Superabrasives

Four Bond used in superabrasives:

  1. Resinoid Bond ( Wheels are fast cutting)
  2. Vitrified Bond
  3. Metal Bond
  4. Single-layer plated Bond
